I overheard a couple of co-workers talking about sherbet (pronounced "sherbert" by the first co-worker, we will get to that later) and sorbet and how they are the exact same thing. I don't feel like talking to these co-workers, because my break is only fifteen minutes long and I would rather update my blog.

So I will set the record straight for those of you who happen to stumble across my blog.

I lied, first things first, let's get the pronounciation correct, people.

Sherbet is pronounced "sure-bay.". Do you see more than one r in the word? No? That's because there is only one r in sherbet and it is after the first e, not the second e!

I don't care if "sure-bay" sounds snobby. You don't pronounce sorbet "sorbert", do you? (Wait, you don't, do you?)

(For my New Zealand friends, I apologize. Apparently, it is pronounced "sure-bert" in New Zealand. However, I am in the States, dealing with a population that is neither from, nor visited New Zealand.)

For the sake of keeping this short, let us focus on the United States sherbet and sorbet dessert definitions.

Sherbet is defined as:

A frozen dessert made primarily of fruit juice, sugar, and water, and also containing milk, egg white, or gelatin.

Sorbet is defined as:

A frozen dessert made from iced fruit puree.

Lesson Over.

Cliff Notes on sherbet vs. sorbet:

Sorbet is frozen pureed fruit.

Sherbet is fruit juice, sugar, water, milk, and sometimes egg white and gelatin mixed together and frozen.

No, they are not exactly the same thing. And for some reason, this misunderstanding, really annoys me.
