No mas HFCS

During my vegan and total vegetarian stints, I read ingredients like they were Harry Potter novels to make sure there were no animal ingredients in my food.
I noticed a trend. About 80% of the processed foods I was consuming had high fructose corn syrup or regular corn syrup listed in the top three ingredients of the item. This creeped me out. Why does wheat bread need HFCS? Why do tortillas need it? Why do condiments of a savory nature need it?
I marked it up as my typical paranoid delusions, but couldn't shake the WTF factor.
Recently, I decided to probe the internet for further information about HFCS and came upon this statement:
According to experts such as Mehmet Oz and Michael Roisen, high-fructose corn syrup is a horrible sweetener. In their landmark book, “You: The Owner’s Manual…,” they state:
“One of the biggest evil influences on our diet is the presence of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sugar substitute that itself is a sugar found in soft drinks and many other sweet, processed foods. The problem is that HCFS inhibits leptin secretion, so you never get the message that you’re full. And it never shuts off gherin, so, even though you have food in your stomach, you constantly get the message that you’re hungry.” (See page 192.)

I am cutting out high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup from my diet. This will be a lot harder than even when I was vegan. HFCS is in everything! Well, everything but fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and homemade baked goods.
Looks like I will be rockin' out food wise Little House on the Prairie style.
Here's to healthier living!
