Three Things
Mar. 26th, 2010 08:50 am1.) With a lack of will to hook the scanner back to the computer, I've managed to update Every Sad Story Needs Nuns four times this week. It's the bamboo tablet, it's my mouse, and while I'm hovering that little pen over the tablet I might as well open up Corel Paint and practice some drawings.
I'm using this as an exercise in learning how to do digital drawings.
In May, ESSNN will be a year old. I still do not claim to be a good artist or writer. My main hope is by doing my shitty little web comic, I can inspire others to take a chance on something they think they are shit at. Maybe someone will click on the link, think "This is shit, I can do better." and go and finally try web comics even though they don't have a degree in Sequential Art or haven't taken an art class since seventh grade or the "right" drawing tools, or whatever it is that is keeping them from doing this.
Or maybe they will see how shitty I continue to be, but how much I enjoy doing the web comic (really, I do enjoy doing the web comic, I swear.) and think "You know, I've always wanted to try [insert activity you've convinced yourself you couldn't do], maybe now is the time."
Listen, I'm not saying you should audition for American Idol believing you will win if you are tone deaf. But that shouldn't prevent you from singing your favourite songs on the radio or trying out for a role in your community theatre's production of Guys and Dolls.
Life isn't about doing everything perfectly. Life is about living and experiences and trying new things. Especially if we think we are going to be awful at them. Because you never know. You might suck at it, but it bring you joy in an otherwise grey day. Or you might turn out to be not bad at all.
Anyway, the moral of this story? Every Sad Story Needs Nuns will be updated Monday through Friday. The drawings will most likely suck, and the storyline boring, but it will be updated with passion and enthusiasm.

3.) Currently Reading: The Best American Comics 2006
thoughts: I should break down and purchase a copy of this volume. It is my favourite volume to date of the series.
Just Watched: *An Angel at My Table, **Hamlet 2
thoughts: *This is the dramatisation of the autobiographies of the New Zealand writer, Janet Frame. It's a bit slow, and a bit long. But a fantastic film to watch. Especially if you are a writer, an outcast, a book lover, or all of the above.
**This was a bizarre little film about a drama teacher at an Arizona high school who wants to be taken a bit more serious. So he writes a sequel to Hamlet that his drama class performs. I loved it, and recommend it to the writers, the high school drama nerds, and those who feel like giving up.
Currently Knitting/Crocheting: Knitting the antler scarf. Crocheting the ten plagues finger puppets.
